[this is good]

With the possible exception of that big red book by John Cheever, T.C. Boyle's Stories is my favorite short story collection. He's got one of my favorite voices.

Oh, and I see some Raymond Carver in there. He's up there pretty high on my list, too.

My brother and I are both interested in that new Chabon collection. I hope he buys it so I don't have to.

My book club book for July (yeah...we choose way in advance) is the Gathering. Glad to hear you had good things to say about it.

And have I mentioned how jealous I am that you get to go to the Strand on a regular basis?

I've read two of T. C. Boyle's novels, and loved them. I've heard great thing about his short stories. Flipping through it in the store and reading a few random story beginnings made me realize I'm probably going to love them too.

I haven't read Maps and Legends yet, but it has my favorite book jacket of 2008 so far. Have you seen it (them) in person yet? McSweeney's outdid themselves.
I hope you enjoy The Gathering too. It's a great book club book, we talked about it for two solid hours with no gaps in the convo, we all had a lot to say.

I do love going to Strand. I feel as though I should just directly deposit my paycheck to them.

I've also read a few T.C. Boyle novels. They were good, but I think he really shines as an author of short stories. If you end up liking Stories, you should look into After the Plague and Tooth & Claw. Both of those collections came out after Stories.

I haven't seen the Chabon cover yet, but McSweeney's does a wonderful job with their covers. Sometimes I think they spend more time on the covers than on what is printed inside. (I'm talking more about the Quarterly Concern.)
